Whole Grade A pods
Resealable 25g pouch
Real pods, not a bottle of extract
Three things a home baker notices the first time they cook with whole Planifolia beans.
01
Taste vanilla, not alcohol
Whole pods carry the seeds and the natural vanillin inside them, so the flavour comes through as vanilla itself rather than the sharp alcoholic note a bottle of extract leaves behind.
02
One 25g pouch goes a long way
25g of whole beans stretches across a good run of custards, creams and bakes, and the pouch reseals after each one so the pods you have not used yet stay as they were.
03
One pod, four ways to use it
Split a pod into custard, steep one in cream, blitz one into sugar, or leave a few to make your own extract — the same bean covers whatever you are baking next.

Seeds out of the pod, straight into the pan
Lay the pod flat and split it lengthways with a small knife, then scrape the seeds out with the back of the blade. Add the seeds and the split pod to the pan together.
The spent pod still has plenty left to give — drop it into a jar of sugar or a bottle of extract and it keeps flavouring for weeks. Nothing goes in the bin.

Three of them on what the flavour is like, how far a 25g pack stretches, and why they stopped buying extract.
I was using extract for years and didn't think I'd notice the difference. First custard I made with these, my husband asked what I'd changed. It's a rounder flavour, less like alcohol.

One pod in a litre of milk and you can taste it in the whole batch. I've done four lots of ice cream and I'm not halfway through the pack.

I bake a sponge most Sundays and I'd been buying the little bottles of essence without thinking about it. The beans smell like actual vanilla when you open the bag, which the bottles never did. Slit one open and scrape it into the batter and that's the whole job.
